Fairfield County lies southeast of Franklin County, with Lancaster as its county seat — an older manufacturing and mill town with a well-established downtown, distinct from the newer suburban growth along the county's northern edge. That northern edge is where most Columbus-area families actually run into Fairfield County: Pickerington straddles the Fairfield/Franklin county line, and while a meaningful part of the city sits in Franklin County, its primary address and much of its growth is in Fairfield. Canal Winchester, just west, straddles Fairfield and Franklin similarly, and is home to Diley Ridge Medical Center, a 24-hour ER and imaging center serving much of this corner of the county.
