Lithopolis is a small village straddling the Fairfield and Franklin county line, just southwest of Canal Winchester. Its name comes from the Greek for "stone city," a nod to the limestone quarrying that shaped the local economy in the 1800s. The village's best-known landmark today is the Wagnalls Memorial, a library and community center built in 1924 with funding from Adam Wagnalls, the Lithopolis native who co-founded the Funk & Wagnalls publishing house — an unusually grand civic building for a village this size. The 2020 census counted roughly 2,500 residents, with more recent estimates above 3,000.
