Early settlers laid out the community in 1838 under the name Newton; by 1839 a post office had opened under the name Raymond, honoring a prominent local family, and the new name stuck. Raymond remains agricultural in character today, surrounded by farmland that grows corn, soybeans, and wheat depending on the season. Children in Raymond attend Raymond Elementary School, part of the Marysville Exempted Village School District, and the community has its own branch of the Marysville Public Library.
