Magnetic Springs is a village of about 267 residents (2020 census) in Leesburg Township, Union County. It has an unusually colorful history for a place this small: the village was platted in 1879 after J.E. Newhouse discovered a mineral spring on his property, Green Bend Gardens, whose waters were found strong enough that a knife blade dipped in them could pick up small metal objects — hence the name. Incorporated in 1883, Magnetic Springs became a genuine resort destination, drawing as many as 10,000 visitors over a summer season at its peak, with ridership boosted after 1903 by the Columbus, Magnetic Springs and Northern Railway interurban line running directly to Richwood and Columbus. The last of its old hotels burned down or were razed in the 1980s, and today it's a quiet, entirely residential village.
