"Medicaid-pending" describes a resident who has applied for Ohio Medicaid to cover long-term care but hasn't yet received an approval or denial — the application is filed and awaiting a decision, which in Ohio can take several weeks to a few months. Some nursing facilities and, less commonly, assisted living communities will admit a resident on a Medicaid-pending basis, generally with the expectation that the family or resident will privately cover costs (or pay the required patient-liability share of income) until the Medicaid determination comes through, at which point the facility is paid retroactively for the covered portion of that period if the application is approved. Not every facility accepts Medicaid-pending residents, and assisted living in Ohio never has its room-and-board cost covered by Medicaid regardless of pending status — only the personal-care services under a waiver like the Assisted Living Waiver can be Medicaid-covered.
