What Is Hospice Care, and How Does It Work in Ohio?

Hospice is a coordinated program of medical, nursing, and emotional support built around comfort rather than curative treatment, for people whose physician has certified a terminal prognosis (generally life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its expected course). In Ohio, hospice programs are licensed by the Ohio Department of Health and must meet state rules covering staffing (including a registered nurse available on every shift), care planning, and patient rights, in addition to federal Medicare hospice conditions of participation. Hospice care in Ohio is typically delivered wherever the patient lives — a private home, an assisted living community, a memory care unit, or a nursing facility — rather than in a separate hospice building, with the hospice team visiting on a schedule built around the patient's needs.
