If a Columbus-area residential care facility participates in Ohio's Assisted Living Waiver and has a Medicaid-certified bed available, a resident who becomes Medicaid-eligible may be able to transition to Medicaid coverage while staying in the same community. Even then, the waiver doesn't cover room and board — federal Medicaid rules bar it — so the resident still owes a state-capped monthly amount from their own income. Not every assisted living community in the Columbus area participates in the waiver, and those that do may have only a limited number of Medicaid-certified beds, which can already be filled.
