Plain City sits along Big Darby Creek, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Columbus, and straddles the Union and Madison county lines — most of the village lies in Union County's Darby Township, with a smaller portion across the line in Madison County's own, separately named Darby Township. The area drew an Amish settlement beginning in 1896, and Plain City retains a visible Amish and Mennonite influence today, including the well-known Der Dutchman restaurant and several Amish-run businesses, even though the last formal Old Order Amish settlement in the immediate area dissolved in 2011. The 2020 census counted 4,065 residents, with recent estimates above 4,700.
