The airport itself takes its name from the village: it was built as Lockbourne Army Air Base in the 1940s, later Lockbourne Air Force Base, before being renamed for World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker. Lockbourne's own history goes back further, to the early 1830s, when it was laid out along the locks of the Ohio and Erie Canal — hence the name.
